Community Room

Just like the real Community Room at PL, this is a place where people can go to see what's happening at the school, post new information or requests for help, and comment on what other people have posted.

Continuing the Budget Discussion for Next Year (2013-14)

Thanks for the great discussion last night! It was clear that there was more to say that we didn't have time for, so I'm starting this thread as a way to continue the conversation. The main item we didn't really discuss at all was whether we want to hire a 4/10 Jr. High English teacher (freeing Liam to do science with kids below Jr. High), which would increase tuition by $300. If we go with the sliding scale, it would increase from $13,000-15,000 to $13,300-$15,300. Liam is willing to continue teach literature next year, but feels the Jr. High kids would be better served by a trained English teacher.

Copies of Jurassic Park

hi folks,

The Junior High will be reading Jurassic Park in the near future and I was hoping some of you have copies we can use.  I'd rather not buy new copies if we have a few collecting dust on a shelf somewhere.  Feel free to drop them off in the main office or in my room, and be sure to include your name so we can return it when we're finished.

Thanks!

Liam

Background Info about Admin = followup from Town Meeting

Several people requested some background information about the meetings, reviews and recommendations to the community that were made over the last several years regarding our administrative structure and current staffing.   I am attaching several documents here that represent part of a almost two year long process of trying to sort out the adminstrative roles and functions.    It was clear to me during and after this process that we, as a community, needed to not just make lists, or make recommendations but really ned to make CHANGES to the administrative team.

Literature in the Junior High

                             September 5, 2012

Dear Junior High families & the PLS community,

It’s been quite a transitional summer for the Junior High at PLS, but I’m ready for the school year to start!  As many of you realize, my responsibilities have shifted to include teaching literature as well as science.  I’ll also be the official Group teacher with support from Liz and Joan.  Due to these added responsibilities, I will no longer be teaching the lower and middle groups science.  I’m very excited for the opportunity to work solely with the Junior High students in creating an integrated, challenging and fun curriculum.  I’ve been working with Jessie and my other resources to help me prepare the literature program and I wanted to share a few thoughts before the school year begins.

Donation Opportunity: Laptop

We are on the search for any working laptops that are wireless ready.  We were fortunate to upgrade our machines for the Junior High and Lisa's Group last year with brand new Chromebooks.  Our next step is to upgrade the machines in Jane and Aubrey's classroom.

Keep your ears open, thanks!

Liam

News of the Science Fair

File 781 File 783
For those who didn’t attend the Science Fair, it was a bright light at school on Thursday morning May 17th. All of the kids in 6th and 7th grades contributed to wonders of science. There were studies and presentations about laughter, the inside of a frog (dissected as you listened), electrical circuits, a magnetic “rifle,” the energy produced by different kinds of alcohol, comparative speeds of a lacrosse ball, acidity of fruit drinks, making cheese, fish hormones and their effects, effects of chewing gum(s) on test taking, and sources of protein.
Wow!
Every student shined in his and her own way.

Bon Voyage!

The day has arrived, the 8th grade is all ready and we head off to Seattle in the morning!  We'll return with wonderful stories of Project Learn in the Pacific Northwest.  Bon Voyage!

Junior High Trip Committee

Come join the newly formed Junior High Trip Committee!  We will be meeting at Earth Bread & Brewery on Tuesday, February 28th at 6pm to discuss the sustainability of the Junior High Trip and need your help.

This committee formed in response to our discussion at the previous town meeting.  We have some initial ideas, but need more input to help us figure out how to sustain this wonderful program for our students and our school.

Please RSVP with Liam  (liamtunes@gmail.com)  if you're planning to attend as we will need to reserve a table at the restaurant.  Cheers!

Summer Educational Opportunities for Junior High Students

I wanted to share a few summer opportunities that seem like a great opportunity for some of our Junior High students.

P.L. Presents at EduCon

This past weekend, Cart Reed and I presented at an annual educational technology conference hosted at Science Leadership Academy known as EduCon.

Our presentation was focused on our use of the Google Chromebooks (new lap tops) with the Junior High. Not many schools in the country are using this specific type of technology, but the trend is leaning in our direction.  It's always a pleasure to share the story of our school, and I'm happy to report our wonderful leap forward in technology as we instituted the use of the chromebooks.  Many thanks to Cart for arranging our position as presenters.

Wanted to purchase: Boys 16" bike
